The region

Douro, heritage of humanity ...

The Plácido Hotel in Tabuaço, is a land of unique landscapes where the green of the vineyards is mixed with the blue of the river waters, where peace and pleasure are hand in hand.

Located to the north, in the district of Viseu, it was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, due to the preservation of the remains of its culture and its architectural heritage, both of human and natural origin in 2001.

Making agriculture its strong point, Tabuaço remains a region heavily influenced by winemaking, where traditions have remained largely unchanged. It is also known for its excellent hunting conditions and rich cuisine.

It is in this magnificent ecological space and an enviable natural heritage, that we present you the Plácido Hotel, a hotel that has modern facilities at your disposal to allow you to enjoy unforgettable moments of rest and pleasure.

The Douro and Port Wine

Over almost two millennia, on the schist slopes of the Douro valley, a unique viticultural landscape was created, an exceptional wine. More than just a gift from nature, Port wine is, in essence, this historical thickness, a collective cultural heritage of work and experiences, knowledge and art, which generations and generations have accumulated. Port wine was and is a key product of the national economy and even more a symbolic value that distinctly represents Portugal in the world.

The history of the Alto Douro vineyard is very old. There is no lack of archaeological discoveries and documentary references to testify to the cultural persistence of the winemaking efforts of other eras.

A visit to Tabuaço cannot fail to include a visit to the Port wine producing estates where you can taste some of the best Port wines.

Regional Gastronomy

The cuisine of the Municipality of Tabuaço is closely linked to the way of life of its ancestors. Tabuaço offers a gastronomy of traditional knowledge and flavors, the main specialty of which is the famous kid stuffed with oven rice, but there is also a great ham and a delicious meat ball and fish in marinated sauce. Chestnut sweets and the Bolo-Rei de Tabuaço, also known as the best bolo-rei in the country, are also very popular.

Land of good wine but also of excellent oils, folares also have a strong tradition here. And if we talk about tradition, let us not forget the rich heritage left by the Cistercian monks when it comes to conventual sweets, which are still very present on the tables on feast days.

Activities and Traditions

In addition to our excellent facilities, the Tabuaço region has to offer a variety of cultural activities and events, which you can enjoy during your stay. Take the opportunity to join the walking tours that the region has to offer, trails made for its visitors to tread centuries of history and observe its fantastic landscapes.

Tabuaço is also a land of attachment to tradition, being famous for its festivals and pilgrimages. Whether as a religious ritual, through attachment to traditions, pure pagan entertainment or anthropological interest are one of the most important moments of the population. Held at times associated with the religious calendar, they are more frequent in the summer.

When talking about tradition, we cannot forget the craftsmanship of the municipality of Tabuaço, which is closely linked to the construction of pieces and instruments related to the culture of the vineyard and the production of wine. Thus, basketry, cooperage and tinwork are the main craft arts in the municipality.

Extreme sports and experiences on the Douro River (Douro by speedboat or by rabelo boat, among others) are activities and pleasures that you can do in the north of the municipality. You can also follow the Route of the Castros and Romanesque Churches, the Route of the wines of Europe or the Route of the castles and stone paths.
